The Asics Magic Speed 4 is here to solve a common runner’s dilemma: how to get elite-level performance without the elite-level price tag. Building on the success of the Magic Speed 3, this updated version brings more cushioning, responsiveness, and speed to the table, making it a good choice for runners who want a versatile shoe that can handle both daily training and race day efforts like a half marathon or marathon. If you’ve been eyeing those top-tier carbon-plated shoes but need something that won’t break the bank, this running shoe could be your answer.

Asics Magic Speed 4 Sole

The outsole of the Asics Magic Speed 4 features ASICSGRIP rubber, strategically placed in high-wear areas for durability and traction. The design includes a midfoot cutaway that exposes the carbon plate, reducing weight while maintaining grip. The rubber is split into lateral and medial wings (my word) from just behind the metatarsal heads and remain that way to the back of the shoe. Lug depth is minimal, as this shoe is optimized for road running (duh) and there are a series of holes punched in the rubber which cut down on some weight.

The midsole is where the Magic Speed 4 truly shines. It rocks a dual-layer foam setup: FF BLAST PLUS in the heel for cushioning and FF TURBO in the forefoot for added responsiveness. Sandwiched between these layers is a full-length carbon plate, designed to enhance propulsion. The stack height is 43.5mm in the heel and 35.5mm in the forefoot, for an 8mm drop.

The outsole’s ASICSGRIP rubber provides excellent traction on both dry and wet surfaces, and its durability is impressive with the material showing little wear after about 50 miles. The midsole offers a balanced feel, with the FF BLAST PLUS providing ample cushion and the FF TURBO adding a noticeable pop in the forefoot. The carbon plate contributes to a snappy, responsive ride without sacrificing ground feel.

Asics Magic Speed 4 Upper

The upper of the Magic Speed 4 is made from a lightweight, engineered mesh that prioritizes breathability. The lace system is straightforward, with a thin, semi gusseted tongue that secures the foot comfortably. The heel counter brings minimal foam padding, aimed at a snug fit without unnecessary bulk.

The engineered mesh upper is very breathable, keeping feet cool even during hot runs. The fit is snug yet comfortable, with no noticeable hot spots or friction areas. The thin tongue and minimal heel padding work well, giving us a secure lockdown without compromising comfort.

The Magic Speed 4 offers a performance-oriented fit. The midfoot and rearfoot are snug, ensuring a secure lockdown, while the toe box provides ample room for natural toe splay. It fits true to size, but those with wider feet might consider going up half a size.

The fit is dialed in, with the snug midfoot and rearfoot preventing any slippage, even during fast-paced runs. The toe box allows for comfortable toe movement, which is especially appreciated on longer runs. Overall, the shoe feels cohesive, with all elements working together seamlessly.

Asics Magic Speed 4 Ride

The ride of the Magic Speed 4 is a fun blend of cushioning and responsiveness. The dual-layer midsole, combined with the full-length carbon plate, provides a snappy, propulsive feel that encourages runners to pick up the pace. At 9.5 oz (270g), it’s lightweight enough for speed training but substantial enough for longer efforts. The responsive ride makes every step feel energized, thanks to the FF TURBO foam and carbon plate, which work together to deliver solid energy return.

This shoe excels in tempo runs, interval workouts, and races up to the half marathon distance. While it can handle slower paces, its true strength lies in its ability to push you to pick it up, making it an ideal choice for runners looking to throw speed work into workouts. Compared to the the previous version, the Magic Speed 3, this version feels more refined, offering a smoother transition and better underfoot feel.

All that said, the ride isn’t quite as poppy as it could be. The carbon plate and upscale foam definitely does its damndest to push you forward but a carbon, super shoe feeling is not in this model.
